Costly staff turnover

We were approached by a major, publicly quoted, professional services firm for help in addressing their staff turnover. It was standing at 50%, with the majority of people leaving in their first year. This revolving door was costing them dearly, something in the region of £80-100000 per employee (not counting the intangible costs involved in constant recruitment, induction, exit management and disruption). Clients were becoming frustrated by the lack of continuity and in a competitive industry, they were losing their edge.

We carried out a comprehensive programme of actions, starting with research into the reasons for high turnover. We followed the study up with the development of a competency framework and a re-engineering of their recruitment process. This involved training their hiring managers in competency based interviewing and in using our Suitability Profiling technique. We designed and conducted tailored Assessment Centres for entry level staff and introduced an Exit Interview programme, supported by training.

As a result, turnover was reduced to 20% within a year, with a significant improvement in the standard of recruits. We continue to provide Performance Development programmes for this client.
